Hey hey !!! Its missjewelz a.k.a Juliana Ali and she’s still rockin’ em keyboard ! Yeah, finally a report just now from the other side of the table as a Technical Official for Powerman Malaysia Duathlon which happened yesterday. To those who rocked the house in Putrajaya yesterday whatever your roles were, I am sure it was HOT HOT and most importantly, FUN !
I’ve been racing duathlons and Powermans ever since my humble introduction to the world of sports and I find that events and sports like this adhere like minded people together whatever background. It is also the more DUable versions of multisports, the perfect intro to anybody dabbling their way to multisports.
Back on to the meat of our story, I served as a Technical Official (T.O.) under TRIAM (this is the experience which I am sharing here in this post) and is was definitely one experience which made me look back that after all this years having races in Powerman, the other part of the fun is actually being able to serve fellow athletes and ensure smoothness of the event. Not forgetting fair play — which I see is important in educating athletes how to respect the rules and regulation of a sports event all for the purpose of safety and fairness.
When you are racing
You know what makes you tick when you go all out in preparing for it, in this case Powerman. So which may be in your case if you did Powerman this year , or any other sports events for that matter. The whole process from registration to training in the blizzard of heat and the major chaos of race morning and that finale you wanted so badly. And the list continues. In my case, its not just the sweat, but also the laughter, cheers and smiles. I’ve had those years behind me sufficient nuff’ to make me smile. It was the whole experience and I grew with it.
From the other side of the fence
So that whole process for me came in the form of waking up super early the past 2 days, delegating domestic tasks, and getting all fussy to which apparel to wear for the day! huhu.. can be quite anal but its part of the package when you are really excited about something and you don’t seem to mind the lack of sleep and worry you might miss the alarm.
Anyway, work as a technical official for this event started on Saturday and Sunday. I was the Chief Transition for the Classic Distance. Reita my colleague in TO announced to me my role via email and I was like..man, I’m honoured but this is like the biggest role I’ve taken on as officials ever since I got my certification. Luckily I was assigned to a team which was very co-operative, helpful and professional. Sunday was the big day and a lot goes through my mind.
If as a racer I kinda strategies how to tackle race day, this time around was how to manage my team of officials, manage the transition to ensure the 2000++ athletes are complying with transition rules and regulation , which most are actually common sense ie. NO CYCLING IN TRANSITION! Obviously the job scope was far more that this. Lots of chipping in other areas where we could lend our hand, communicating, educating and making the whole event as smooth as possible.
Doesn’t sound much? Yeah I probably understand that as a racer all I knew was that I made through transition fast, remember where my bike is and put on my gears as fast as possible. Transition was kinda like my forte ya know. hahaa… I enjoy ‘overtaking’ other people at transition and sprinkle more fun by making sure I stay ahead on the second run ! heeehehe..just sharing for the fun of it lah!)
Anyway…..
Somebody significant with the success and popularity of Powerman Malaysia ALL these years expressed to me ‘It grows on you’when I mentioned that I am having a post T.O blues after the event wrapped up yesterday. I rarely have people saying this to me (hence had to check out the definition to be sure what this person really meant). The source which I found describes that this English idiom/expression means ‘that you like something more each day/ gradually like it more‘.
Spot on!
I served as a technical official for Ironman 70.3, Xterra Malaysia in 2014, Asian Triathlon Championship in Hong Kong. In 2015 (I was carrying my 2nd baby!) so I chilled for a bit! And now continue where I left of. Definitely an important experience which I would recommend for you guys to try ; support, volunteer, officiate — anything which gives you a different view and better appreciation on how an event is made successful with and by everybody on the ground. Being able to work as a team is an important attribute ! The added bonus is that of satisfaction that you are contributing to something bigger and that feeling is oh-so-awesome !
Some pics I manage to take this past 2 days below :-

Yeah
Babe, I love you so
I want you to know
That I’m gonna miss your love
The minute you walk out that door
So please don’t go
Don’t go
Don’t go away
Please don’t go
Don’t go
I’m begging you to stay
If you leave, at least in my lifetime
I’ve had one dream come true
I was blessed to be loved
By someone as wonderful as you
So please don’t go
Don’t go
Don’t go away
Please don’t go
Don’t go
I’m begging you to stay
Hey, hey, hey
Yeah
Babe, I love you so
I, I want you to know
That I’m gonna miss your love
The minute you walk out that door
So please don’t go
Don’t go
Don’t go away
Hey, hey, hey
I need your love
I’m down on my knees
Beggin’ please, please, please
Don’t go
Don’t you hear me, baby?
Don’t leave me now
Oh, no, no, no, no
Please don’t go
I want you to know
That I, I, I love you so
Please don’t leave me, baby
Please don’t go
