Yesterday was Wesak Day. I manage to wish my Buddhist friends 🙂 Wesak Day is a celebration to signify the birth of Buddha (got the info from Siok Bee , a friend of mine). It it always nice to recognize the faith of others. The same way each one of us want our own faith to be recognized. Respect others in order to earn that respect. This essence and ingredients Of life need not be complex. It should be simple in order for us to really appreciate the values that we hold on to. And we have to be clear of what exactly are we valuing. The simplest of things can cause trouble because of our own ignorance — we fail to seek knowledge and learn. Therefore whatever assumptions that we have can unfairly be based on popular, contemporary belief, which may or may not have gone astray from the truth.
I was thinking about the Gregorian calendar this afternoon. And the Islamic calendar. Is it too big an issue if a Muslim were to celebrate new year on the 1st of January? I compared it then to celebrating birthdays. . For me me personally, I do celebrate my birthday, and I do acknowledge the coming of new year. While i may or may not celebrate new year on the Gregorian calendar per se , i do acknowledge the passing of time, no matter what calendar i use to measure time. Like birthdays, every anniversary of that particular date gives us a sense of humility, for us to reflect back. How small are we compared to the rest of the universe, how mortal our life is..and a few others along that line.
I will be turning 30 next year.. A big three O. Yikes..when august comes, i hope I’ll still be me. Time flies so fast and it doesn’t bother me whether I am using a Gregorian or Hijri calendar. Digging up the history of various calendars is interesting. Of how did the Hijri calendar come to surface etc, how the days in the malay language are named ; which i found out later on when i studied Arabic .. They are basically named after Arabic numbers. 1,2,3,4,5 in Arabic is wahid, ithnain, thalatha, arba’a, khamsah. translated to Malays, it becomes Ahad, Isnin, Selasa, Rabu, Khamis (Monday to Thursday in english).
Anyways, I went running this morning. Just a 13km run around double hill near Bukit Aman. I was not surprised to see the regular Sunday morning faces there. Met Don Khor, Lawrence and a few others. Abu Soffian(Abu Power) was there as well. Felt so good to be meeting old friends who i haven’t had the chance to catch up with for a long time.
I am preparing for a big event happening in June. It will be my first event outside Malaysia. And in July, it the annual PD Triathlon. Looking forward to better my time especially on my ever sluggish swim pace. The fun part of this year is that my major races are early in the season — Kenyir Lake Triathlon, Sabah Adventure Challenge, etc.. But, in early September , I wil be racing in China ! Stay tuned to get the details. But I will still be doing the Powerman Malaysia- my annual event ! Not sure about Penang Bridge Marathon though as it will be held a week after Powerman. I did both these 2 races back to back last year. Memang pengsan ! I suffered the last 3-5km” during Penang Marathon.. Not exactly sure if I want to repeat this! I am more careful nowadays on what i register for. Cant simply register.
Okaylah..I need to sleep now…
